Short Tip on How to Write a Great Email Subject Line: First, Don’t Forget to Include One

After receiving several emails that had no subject line (a few were from big brands) I want to make a quick, but crucial point:

The most important advice about writing an email subject line is to remember to include one!

The subject line is your first opportunity to persuade, inform, direct…you know, cause the recipient to click and open the email.

When an email hits someone’s inbox and it has the dreaded (No subject) as its salutation, that can spark a range of emotions on behalf of the recipient; from indifference, to anger to bemusement. Time is spent and people are paid to create email marketing campaigns. If you are a brand that the recipient thinks highly of, you might stand a chance with no subject line, but why take that chance?

Your email subject lines exist to generate opens. It’s a two part process: Create a great subject line, and remember to include it. Do not trust software to check it for you. Assign a human being to this task, because a human being is on the other end looking for any excuse to ignore you.
